Solder Wire 60/40

  • Melting Range: It melts at approximately 183°C to 190°C.

  • Plastic State: Unlike “eutectic” 63/37 solder, 60/40 has a small “pasty” or plastic range (about 5°C). This means it stays soft for a brief moment before fully solidifying, which requires the user to keep the joint steady during cooling to avoid a “cold solder joint.”

  • Core Type: Most 60/40 wire for electronics is Rosin Core, meaning the flux (cleaning agent) is built right into the center of the wire.

Description

Why Use 60/40 Solder?

Benefit Description
Lower Heat Melts at a lower temperature than lead-free solder (~217°C), reducing the risk of heat damage to sensitive components or plastic connectors.
Better Wetting “Wetting” is how well the solder spreads. 60/40 flows smoothly and bonds quickly to copper, creating a shiny, reliable joint.
Durability Lead adds ductility, meaning the joints are less likely to crack under mechanical stress or thermal expansion.
Aesthetics Finished joints are bright and shiny, making it easy to visually inspect for “cold” or poor connections (which appear dull).
