A 63mm cable gland PVC hood (shroud) is an extra-large protective cover designed specifically for M63 metric glands or 2 ½” ET (Electrical Thread) industrial glands. In the standard industrial sizing system, this is usually classified as a Size 10 or Size 11 shroud.

At this scale, you are dealing with massive primary power feeders, such as 185mm², 240mm², or 300mm² 3-core Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cables used for main building intakes or heavy industrial machinery.

Key Applications

  • Critical Earthing Protection: In cables of this magnitude, the potential fault current is enormous. The shroud ensures that the Earth Tag (Banjo) and the armor clamping mechanism remain completely dry. Any corrosion here could lead to a catastrophic failure of the earthing system.

  • Heavy Weatherproofing: Large glands have significant gaps in their hexagonal threads. The shroud acts as a primary water-shedding layer, preventing moisture from entering the gland body or the electrical enclosure.

  • Chemical & UV Defense: It protects the brass gland from “pitting” and oxidation, which is especially common in industrial plants, coastal areas, or locations with high chemical exposure.2

Professional Installation for Large Sizes

Installing a 63mm shroud is a physical challenge due to the extreme thickness of the PVC and the weight of the cable.

Step Technique Why?
 Softening Submerge in near-boiling water for at least 5–10 minutes. Cold PVC at this thickness is effectively rigid plastic. It must be rubbery to stretch over the gland.
 Lubrication Use cable pulling lubricant or silicone spray on the cable jacket. This prevents the shroud from “gripping” the cable prematurely as you try to slide it into position.
 Trimming Use a heavy-duty safety knife to trim the “tail.” Ensure the opening is roughly 5mm smaller than the cable OD to maintain a high-tension waterproof seal.
Final Fit Pull the “bell” end firmly until it overlaps the Earth Tag. It should sit flush against the enclosure wall to prevent any exposed metal from corroding.
